Work will soon commence on a commemorative wall on The Straight to mark the location of the Oran Park Raceway Finish Line.
Oran Park Town has a rich history in motorsports. This dates back to 1962 when the Oran Park Raceway was established by the volunteer labour of the Singer Car Club.
Oran Park Raceway hosted many significant motor racing events including several Australian Touring Car Championships, which went on to be known as the V8 Supercars, as well as the Australian Grand Prix on two occasions.
The circuit, which was extended in 1973 into a distinctive Figure 8, was located in the south western corner of the Oran Park Town development, with the finish line located in “The Straight” adjacent to Doohan Ovals. This was the site of victories by some of the greatest Australian and international raceway competitors whose names now adorn the streets and parks in Oran Park Town.
To recognise this significant landmark and share it with future generations, we will soon be undertaking works to instal a commemorative sandstone wall on The Straight in the location of the former finish line, together with artwork in the footpath representative of the finish line.
These works will commence shortly and weather permitting are expected to be complete in 6 weeks. The footpath will remain open for the majority of this time and will only be closed off for a short period.
We thank you for your patience while this work is undertaken to celebrate the victorious competitors who raced at Oran Park Raceway.
